
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Antonio Abayomi Jorge Ferreira was born at Port Harcourt on August 1, 1938. After schooling at St Paul’s ( Breadfruit ) School Lagos and Christ’s School Ado Ekiti respectively, he studied medicine at the University College, Ibadan. He attended the Lister Institute, Edinburgh Postgraduate Board of Medicine, Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and eventually enrolled as a Fellow of the College. A war veteran who was the first Commanding Officer of 3 Field Ambulance Organisation and Military Hospital Port Harcourt respectively, he was an officer of the Medical Corps of the Nigerian Army for seventeen years. In the period, he attended the Course of Military Medicine for Young Officers at Macolin, Switzerland.
A seasoned Marxist veteran, he was Chairman of the University College branch of the Nigerian Youth Congress NYC, Vice President, African Affairs National Union of Nigerian Students NUNS in which capacity he organised the Pan African Students’ Congress PASC in 1964 at Cairo. The congress brought the National Unions of students of 54 African countries under one umbrella. He was Chairman of the University College Ibadan branch of the Socialist Workers and Farmers Party of Nigeria SWAFP and later Chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party 1989. He is currently the President of the Democratic Alternative DA and was the party’s presidential candidate in the general elections of 2003. He is the Chairman, Board of Governors of the Nigerian Peoples Institute for Democracy NIPID the party school of the DA.
He has published numerous academic papers and made several conference presentations in the fields of surgery, family medicine, ethics and medical jurisprudence. He is the author of Savagery in politics, the hindrance to national development that came out in England in 2006. He contributed the chapter on The Role of Geographical Zoning in Nigeria’s Democracy in the anthology on Nigeria’s Stumbling Democracy and its implications For Africa’s Democratic Movement that was published in Westport, United States in 2008.
Abayomi Ferreira has published profusely in the past forty years papers, articles and monograms on politics, national development, international relations and socialist development programmes.
Dr Ferreira is married to Esther Ayodele Idowu and has six children, some of whom have made him a grandfather.
